1890 | Canadian George Dixon becomes the first black to win a boxing championship when he defeats England’s Edwin Wallace in the 18th round of a bantamweight title fight in London.

1894 | American Annie Londonderry begins her quest to become the first woman to bicycle around the world (accomplishes feat in September 1895).

1898 | Defending champion R.F. Doherty defeats his younger brother Laurence in five sets in the final at Wimbledon.

1904 | Laurence Doherty wins third straight Wimbledon title defeating Frank Riseley in straight sets.

1914 | In Paris, France, Jack Johnson retains his lineal heavyweight boxing championship as he defeats Frank Moran on points as the 20 round goes the distance.

1924 | At Liverpool Golf Club, Walter Hagen wins the Open Championship for the second time with a one stroke win over Ernest Whitcombe.

1931 | Walter Hagen captains the U.S. Ryder Cup to victory for the second time with over Great Britain with a 9-3 score.

1933 | Great Britain wins the Ryder Cup with a 6.5 to 5.5 win over the United States. It would be the last time Great Britain won the Cup for another two decades.

1939 | Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Bees game ends in a tie game after 23 innings of play with the game being called due to darkness.

1954 | In a FIFA World Cup quarterfinal, Hungary defeats Brazil 4-2. A fight breaks out with three players being ejected. Fighting continued after the match was over and spill into the dressing rooms.

1959 | Mickey Wright wins her second straight U.S. Women’s Open title with a two stroke win over Louise Suggs.

1969 | Honduras and El Salvador broke off diplomatic ties after fan violence during FIFA World Cup qualifying. The incidents would lead to what is called “The Football War” lasting around 100 hours.

1971 | JoAnne Carner wins the U,S. Women’s Open by seven strokes ahead of Kathy Whitworth.

1977 | San Francisco Giants first baseman Willie McCovey hits two home runs in the sixth inning against the Cincinnati Reds in Cincinnati.

1980 | Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jerry Reuss throws a no-hitter against the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

1984 | The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the NCAA violated antitrust laws when they restricted the control of television rights in the landmark case of the NCAA vs. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma.

1984 | France defeats Spain 2-0 in the UEFA European Championship Final at Parc des Princes in Paris.

1986 | Robby Thompson of the San Francisco Giants sets a record by getting caught stealing four times in a game.

1988 | Mike Tyson defeats Michael Spinks with a knockout just 91 seconds into the fight.

1990 | Derrick Coleman selected by the New Jersey Nets with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

1992 | #1 seed Jim Courier upset in the third round by Andrei Olhovskly, ranked 193rd at the time, in four sets at Wimbledon.

1993 | Jim Colbert wins the Senior Players Championship by one stroke over Raymond Floyd.

1993 | New York Mets pitcher Anthony Young loses his 24th straight game.

1998 | With the first pick in the NHL Entry Draft, the Tampa Bay Lightning select Vincent Lecavalier.

1999 | Frankfurt Galaxy defeat the Barcelona Dragons 38-24 at Rheinstadion in Dusseldorf, Germany to win World Bowl VII.

1999 | Hale Irwin wins the Senior Players Championship by 7 strokes to grab his 5th major golf title.

2001 | The Washington Wizards select Kwame Brown with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

2010 | Christie Kerr wins the LPGA Championship  by 12 strokes ahead of Song-Hee Kim of South Korea.

2013 | Anthony Bennett selected with the first pick of  the NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

2014 | The Phoenix Coyotes franchise rebrands itself as the Arizona Coyotes after a change in team ownership.

2021 | Nelly Korda wins the Women’s PGA Championship by three strokes over Lizette Salas.
