1899 | R.F. Doherty defeats Arthur Gore in five sets to win his third straight Wimbledon crown.

1906 | Hungary’s Ferenc Szisz wins the first motor racing Grand Prix event in Le Mans, France.

1911 | 19 -year old John McDermott wins the U.S. Open in a playoff against Mike Brady and George Simpson. McDermott is the first American born golfer to win the tournament.

1916 | Cleveland Indians become first team to experiment with putting numbers on baseball jerseys in a game against the Chicago White Sox.

1925 | Jim Barnes wins the Open Championship by one stroke over Ted Ray and Archie Compston.

1938 | Lonny Frey of the Cincinnati Reds gets a total of eight hits in a double header against the Philadelphia Phillies.

1955 | Patty Berg wins her 5th Western Open with a two stroke victory over Louise Suggs and Fay Crocker.

1959 | Ingemar Johansson defeats Floyd Patterson with a TKO in the third round at Yankee Stadium in New York for a heavyweight title.

1976 | Muhammad Ali and Japanese professional wrestler fought to a 15- round draw at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan.

1991 | Charlotte Hornets select Larry Johnson with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

1992 | Denmark stuns Germany with a 2-0 win at the UEFA European Championship Final in Gothenburg, Sweden.

1993 | The Ottawa Senators select Alezandre Daigle with the first pick in the NHL Entry Draft.

1994 | Kirby Puckett passes Rod Carew as the Minnesota Twins all-time hits leader with 2,088 career hits.

1996 | Allen Iverson selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the first pick of the 1996 NBA Draft.

1999 | The Atlanta Thrasher select Patrik Stefan with the first pick of the NHL Entry Draft.

2014 | Argentina’s Luis Suarez is expelled from the 2014 FIFA World Cup for biting another player.

2014 | Andrew Wiggins selected with the first pick in the NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

2015 | The Edmonton Oilers select Connor McDavid with the first pick of the NHL Entry Draft.

2016 | Chile defeats Argentina in 4-2 in penalty kicks at the Copa America Final at MetLife Stadium in Eat Rutherford, New Jersey.

2017 | Team New Zealand defeats Team USA 7-1 in Bermuda for the America’s Cup.

2021 | During Stage 1 of the Tour de France, a spectator with a sign caused the largest pile up in the tour’s history. The spectator was later tracked down and arrested.

2022 | The Colorado Avalanche defeat the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning, 2-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. It is the third championship for the Avalanche franchise.

2022 | South Korea’s Chun In-gee secures a one stroke win over Lexi Thompson and Minjee Lee for the Women’s PGA Championship at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.
